Giveaway: WIN tickets to “DEEP” – A play about one of Cork’s most iconic clubs

Win tickets in Ireland

This week we saw the closure of one Cork’s most important late night venues, The Pav. Cork is a vibrant and thrilling city with a variety of clubs and bars in which to revel.

Corkonians may also recall another iconic club,  Sir Henry’s;  a bar and nightclub on South Main Street in Cork, Ireland, which opened in 1978 and closed in 2003.

Once upon a time Sir Henry’s was thee place to go for dance/trance , not to mention it’s popularity as a live rock music venue where the likes of Thin Lizzy and Mick Jones performed.

Anyone who was into house music belonged in Sir Henry’s.

Ray Scannell is set to take his stage play ‘DEEP’ on a nationwide tour of summer festivals and venues this year which kicked off with Limerick’s Make A Move Festival on July 3rd.

Featuring interviews with Sir Henry’s main figures and footage of nights at the club, ‘DEEP’ is part fiction, part documentary and explores the spiritual home of Cork’s first generation of House Fanatics.

It’s the summer of 1988 and Cork’s emigration generation are following the beat… in perfect time, for a Music Movement simmering from Ireland’s first House Club. ‘DEEP’ is the story of an era told through the personal journey of a hapless Vinyl Junkie Larry Lehane who, at 35, is turning the tables on the peaks and troughs of two decades, from the rise of Acid House to the Euro Changeover.

Larry is growing up in a society slowly becoming disillusioned with Institutions. Henry’s dance floor evinced an unprejudiced cross-section of class, race, sex & creed. A sense of communion for those disenfranchised from the wider community. Looking back now, Larry wonders how much of it is remembered through smiley-faced, rose-tinted glasses?

Sounds great eh?!

This play will appeal not only to those who was part of Sir Henry’s regular clientèle, but anyone who gets a thrill from the effects of music on our lives.

Giveaway: Win The Jigsaw Murders EP and 4 passes to their Dublin gig.

The Jigsaw Murders are one of Dublin’s most sorely under-rated bands. The unsigned band are a music force to be reckoned with, combining a modern sound with a more punk rock element; something that has certainly faded out in recent years. The Jigsaw Murders are playing with equally impressive and fellow Dublin band Medz alongside ‘My mind Races’, ‘Radioactive Grandma’ (what a name for a band!) and ‘Teddy Ballet’ on the 22nd of June in Dublin’s Fibber Magee’s; Dublin’s most well known rock venue which has come along from strength to strength over the past 12 months.

The Jigsaw Murders have been kind enough to give me an EP to giveaway to one lucky person, not only that, the prize includes passes for you and three friends to this exciting, rocking gig which takes place very soon. To be in with a chance of winning you simply have to like my facebook page, HERE  and leave a comment below telling me you have done it. Giveaway: The history of rock

I decided to give those who read my blog a chance to win something I myself would not mind adding to my own hoard of books.

It took all of 15 minutes to decide what to give away. You can win a copy of ‘the history of rock’, a brillaint book worth €27 that accounts for each influential band and artist to ever grace a stage since the 1950s.

It is a must read for any music lover, with tid-bits on Elvis, the Beatles, the white stripes and pretty much any band and singer that has broken new ground since Hank Williams, in fact I was tempted to keep it myself.
