This week we saw the closure of one Cork’s most important late night venues, The Pav. Cork is a vibrant and thrilling city with a variety of clubs and bars in which to revel.
Once upon a time Sir Henry’s was thee place to go for dance/trance , not to mention it’s popularity as a live rock music venue where the likes of Thin Lizzy and Mick Jones performed.
Anyone who was into house music belonged in Sir Henry’s.
Ray Scannell is set to take his stage play ‘DEEP’ on a nationwide tour of summer festivals and venues this year which kicked off with Limerick’s Make A Move Festival on July 3rd.
Featuring interviews with Sir Henry’s main figures and footage of nights at the club, ‘DEEP’ is part fiction, part documentary and explores the spiritual home of Cork’s first generation of House Fanatics.
It’s the summer of 1988 and Cork’s emigration generation are following the beat… in perfect time, for a Music Movement simmering from Ireland’s first House Club. ‘DEEP’ is the story of an era told through the personal journey of a hapless Vinyl Junkie Larry Lehane who, at 35, is turning the tables on the peaks and troughs of two decades, from the rise of Acid House to the Euro Changeover.
Larry is growing up in a society slowly becoming disillusioned with Institutions. Henry’s dance floor evinced an unprejudiced cross-section of class, race, sex & creed. A sense of communion for those disenfranchised from the wider community. Looking back now, Larry wonders how much of it is remembered through smiley-faced, rose-tinted glasses?
Sounds great eh?!
This play will appeal not only to those who was part of Sir Henry’s regular clientèle, but anyone who gets a thrill from the effects of music on our lives.
