Style: Retro style must haves on the cheap.

Everyone loves splashing out on luxury fashion products but really, I am sure most of M&E’s readers are more interested in saving on the wardrobe and spending on the fun. For that reason I’ve been poking around to find must-have retro wardrobe staples that won’t eat into to your Friday Fund.

The Check Shirt.

The check shirt is a must have for the casual wardrobe of any aspiring rockabella. Fitted check shirts are my absolute favourite but I am loving the reintroduction of grunge-era oversized checks which can easily be given a dose of ’40s glamour by cinching in the waste with a belt and wearing with drainpipe trousers and ballet flats or converse.

Pick of the bunch is this red check shirt from Penneys, only €13, and due in stores at the end of August.

The Liner

No retro look is complete with a lashing of eyeliner; less isn’t always more and when you where it every day paying €15 for a liner pencil is not a viable option. Head to Penneys instead to pick up a Catrice Kohl Pencil for €2.49; can’t go wrong. It has a decent enough staying power for the cost and once you keep it pared it stays on perfectly.

Whether around your neck, your waist or in your hair bows are of course an important part of any ’50s look unless going Betty Rizzo on it.  If you want a few different looks there is no sense on splashing out on your bows and that’s where High Street Favourite’s New Look come in. I pop in once in a while to stock up on head bands and clips and with this hairband for only €3.99, you certainly can’t turn your nose up at it.

The Black Pencil Skirt

If you buy a pencil skirt in any colour make sure you buy a black one. These figure hugging wardrobe essentials are flatter, sexy and cheap if you want them to be. Oh yes, all the designers make them, but why spend €80 or more on a skirt when you can get them for as little as £12.99 on

There you have it; four Retro style must haves for your wardrobe on the cheap. If you want to have a few retro looks but don’t have the cash just look beyond the big names and you will find a treasure trove of trinkets, dresses, tops and skirts that will tie a plethora of 1940’s and 50’s looks together. Happy shopping!
